How FIS connects production, technology and people in the Volkswagen Group over three decades.

On August 1, 2026, Volkswagen Group Digital Solutions GmbH celebrated a very special anniversary: Torsten has been working for the FIS production information and control system for exactly 30 years. With him, his colleagues Bert and Radek also started their work with FIS around this time. Three decades of technological changes, production start-ups, rollouts, support assignments and innovations lie behind them – and they are still part of the FIS family with passion today.

A system with history

FIS – the production information and control system – has been supporting vehicle production in the Volkswagen Group for over 30 years. The basis for the system, which is now established throughout the Group, was created in the early 1990s on the basis of OS/2, AIX and DB2. An important milestone was the first productive outing of the Polo A03 in Wolfsburg. With a lot of commitment, the team at the time developed a solution that was ready for production on time and laid the foundation for FIS’s success story today.

Today, the teams look after 15 plants, and at peak times there were as many as 18 vehicle plants at the same time in Europe and South Africa. In addition, they are responsible for the operation and support of around 350 servers that support the modern FIS system landscape. With their know-how, our colleagues have been supporting production for many years, accompanying international rollouts and ensuring stable and reliable operation of the FIS systems in the Volkswagen Group.

Always close to production – for 30 years

What once began with a small team for two plants is now an organization with 116 employees. FIS supports vehicle production with 7×24 support in accordance with ITIL, is responsible for rollouts and continuously accompanies new requirements from the plants.

Today, the team includes support staff in the front and back office, developers, process managers, project managers and rollout specialists. Together, they manage a broad portfolio – from production control and logistics solutions to quality modules to process, integration and Industry 4.0 topics – and thus make a direct contribution to the stability and further development of production.
